Is It True That Ube and Taro Are the New Matcha?
A few years ago, especially these past few years, Matcha always has been the highlight and star ingredient in cafes all around the world.
Matcha Lattes?
Matcha Cheesecake?
Matcha Ice Cream?
So many Matcha this and Matcha that, even Matcha croissants somehow found their way onto cafe menus!
But recently, something purple has been stealing the spotlight.
Scroll through Instagram or TikTok, and you'll probably spot dreamy Lavender Lattes, vibrant purple Milkshakes, or gorgeous desserts that almost look too pretty to eat.
So... has Matcha finally met it’s match?
Meet the newest cafe darlings: Ube and Taro.
Here's the biggest misconception people have:
"Aren't Ube and Taro basically the same?"
Not at all!
Although they're both purple (well... kind of), they're completely different ingredients with their own personalities.
Ube is a purple yam originally from the Philippines, famous for its naturally vibrant purple color.
Its flavor is often described as:
Sweet
Creamy
Slightly vanilla-like
A little nutty
Almost dessert-like
If Matcha is the sophisticated friend who enjoys quiet afternoons reading books...
Ube is the friend who always orders dessert first.
No wonder it's become a favorite for:
Ube Lattes
Cheesecakes
Donuts
Mochi
Ice Cream
Cookies
Basically... if dessert exists, someone has probably made an Ube version.
Now let's talk about Taro.
Unlike Ube, Taro is a root vegetable enjoyed across many Asian countries.
Its flavor is much more subtle:
Earthy
Nutty
Mildly sweet
Comforting
Creamy when cooked
Think of Taro as the quiet friend who somehow gets along with everyone.
It blends beautifully with Milk, Tea, Coffee, Coconut, and even savory dishes.
That's why you'll often find it in:
Taro Bubble Tea
Smoothies
Milk Lattes
Ice Cream
Cakes
Traditional desserts
Good question. There isn't just one reason. There are three.
Let's be honest… Sometimes we order drinks because they taste amazing.
Other times… We order them because they deserve their own Instagram post. The gorgeous purple shades of Ube and Taro instantly grab attention. No filters needed.
Coffee? Still delicious.
Matcha? Always iconic.
But customers also love trying something they've never tasted before. Ordering an Ube Latte or Taro Smoothie feels like discovering a hidden gem, and cafes love giving customers that experience.
One of the biggest reasons Matcha became so popular is because it's incredibly versatile.
Guess what? Ube and Taro are just as fun to experiment with.
Imagine drinks like:
Dirty Ube Latte
Ube Coconut Cloud
Taro Brown Sugar Latte
Purple Cold Brew
Taro Cheesecake Frappé
Matcha × Ube Fusion Latte
One ingredient...
Endless creativity.
Short answer? Nope.
Think of them like different music genres. You don't stop listening to Pop Music just because you discovered Jazz. The same goes for cafe drinks. Each ingredient offers its own unique experience.
They're not competitors. They're simply giving cafe lovers more delicious choices.
Maybe not. But purple is definitely having it’s moment. Just like Matcha introduced people to vibrant green drinks years ago, Ube and Taro are inspiring cafes to think beyond the ordinary.
They're colorful.
They're delicious.
They're versatile.
And perhaps most importantly...
They're making people excited to try something new.
While Ube are both delicious in their own right, Ube definitely is our choice for making delicious Lattes. One of the easiest and most delicious ways to incorporate Ube into your daily routine is through Ubee Syrup from Tutu Flavors, a sweet and creamy concentrate made from Purple Yam. Here’s how you can use it to craft the perfect Ube Latte:
Prepare Your Base: Brew a shot of Espresso or strong Coffee.
Mix in Ubee Syrup: Add 1-2 tablespoons or 20ml of Ubee Syrup to the Coffee. Adjust the amount based on your preferred sweetness with Simple Syrup (usually 10ml is enough).
Add Steamed Milk: Pour in Steamed Milk of your choice, such as Whole, Oat, or Almond milk. You could also add Almond Mylk or Oat Mylk powder from Tutu Flavors to enhance or adjust the creaminess of the Steamed Milk so it could pair beautifully with the syrup.
Optional Toppings: Garnish with Whipped Cream, a drizzle of more Ubee Syrup, or even a sprinkle of edible glitter for a touch of glam.
The result is a vibrant purple Latte that is as eye-catching as it is delicious. The natural sweetness and creamy texture of the Ube Syrup perfectly balance the bitterness of the Coffee, creating a unique and satisfying drink.
Is Ube and Taro the new Matcha? Not exactly.
“Matcha walked so Ube and Taro could run.”
Instead of replacing the green icon, these purple stars are creating a whole new chapter in cafe culture—one that's sweeter, creamier, and just as Instagram-worthy.
So the next time you're standing in front of a cafe menu wondering what to order...
Why not give purple a chance?
Who knows?
Your new favorite drink might not be green anymore. ?
